Melanoma is the most dangerous skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun and tanning beds cause damage to your skin cells DNA. This damage then causes mutations leading to rapidly multiplying damaged skin cells and form malignant tumors. The cancer can metastasize throughout the body and cause issues elsewhere and lead to death. If melanoma is caught and treated early it can be cured.
To detect a possible melanoma use the ABCDEs of melanoma:
A– Asymmetry – a mole that has an asymmetric shape
B– Border – uneven borders
C– Color – variety of colors, brown, tan, black, red, blue
D– Diameter – melanomas are usually larger in diameter the ¼ inch (pencil eraser)
E– Evolving – any change (size, shape, color, elevation, symptoms such as bleeding)
